"TO THE ICE-SHELF AND BACK" Thursday, 16 May 2013
Helm van Zijl of the Cape Bird Club had the very good fortune to be invited to join the SA Agulhas II on her first trip to the Antarctic - he was tasked with the job of counting sea birds on the trip down and back as part of on-going survey of sea birds in the southern ocean.
"TO THE ICE-SHELF AND BACK" is a slide show of Helm's trip in the SA Agulhas II from early December 2012 to mid February 2013.
All are welcome to come and enjoy this most interesting talk - it will take place immediately after our AGM.
Venue: Rietvlei Education Centre, Table Bay Nature Reserve, 10 Sandpiper Crescent, Table View.
Date: Thursday, 16 May 2013

Flight for Birders 18 & 19 May 2013
A bird identification course for novice and intermediate bird-watchers will be held at the Environmental Education Centre, Intaka Island, Century City on 18 and 19 May 2013.
The “Flight for Birders” bird identification and conservation course by Anton Odendal will be presented at Intaka Island on 18 and 19 May 2013. The costs include the course manual and a certificate endorsed by BirdLife South Africa – roughly 1,600 slides and drawings will be used.
The contents of the course get updated every second year and this has now been done – in many cases images of similar and potentially confusing species have been combined on the same slide in order to illustrate differences. The development of an infrastructure for birding tourists in local areas will also be highlighted. In the vast majority of the slides English and Afrikaans names of species are printed onto the slide.
The course focuses on basic steps in the identification of birds, places heavy emphasis on where to find the rare and often endemic birds in southern Africa and illustrates how ordinary bird-watchers could become involved in the conservation of birds and their habitats.
DETAILS IN BRIEF:
DATES: 18 and 19 May 2013
VENUE: The Environmental Education Centre, Intaka Island, Century City
COSTS: R 450-00, that include the course manual and certificate.
